Respect at Work

Building a safe and respectful workplace

Humanology Group partnered with one of Queensland's largest coal export terminals to embed respectful workplace behaviours across all teams through a site-wide Respect at Work program.  Recognising that protecting people required more than managing physical risk, DBCT engaged Humanology to deliver scenario-based learning that addressed unconscious bias, legal obligations, respectful communication, and practical bystander actions.  Tailored to the realities of a high-risk industrial environment, the program created a culture where people feel valued, treated fairly, and empowered to act respectfully in daily operations.

Challenge

DBCT's diverse workforce required a consistent approach to emerging psychosocial risks and respectful behaviour. Sensitive topics like bias, harassment, and positive duty needed psychologically safe, culturally relevant approaches that resonated with operational crews, supervisors, and leaders alike. The challenge was creating empowerment through honest dialogue, not lectures.

Solution

Humanology Group delivered site-wide Respect at Work training:

  • Program scale: 29 sessions, 460+ participants across all levels

  • Tailored design: Learning contextualised for operational culture and high-risk environments

  • Blended delivery: Interactive workshops, real-world scenarios, peer reflection, psychologically safe facilitation

  • Practical tools: ACTS model for intervention, bystander action frameworks, legal and psychosocial obligation guidance

Result

The program delivered immediate, measurable, and cultural outcomes:

  • 98% of participants rated training as valuable or extremely valuable

  • 95% reported feeling very or extremely confident to apply learnings

  • Increased awareness, stronger communication, and consistent understanding of respectful behaviours

  • Leaders reported clearer expectations, improved trust, and better "upstander" behaviours

The program sparked lasting dialogue, embedding language and awareness around psychological safety and respect across the business.

WHY IT WORKED

The program succeeded because it was contextualised for DBCT's operational culture. Rather than lecturing, Humanology created space for honest dialogue using real-world scenarios that resonated with crews, supervisors, and leaders alike. The ACTS model and bystander frameworks gave people practical tools they could use immediately. High engagement and confidence scores reflected content that was both scientifically grounded and authentically relevant.

“Humanology seamlessly navigated challenging topics, providing thought-provoking, relevant and impactful content that spoke to the individual while meeting our business needs. They truly live up to their name — passionate, authentic, and transformative.” - L&D Advisor
